Mathematical Literacy

On Teaching Math Episode 8

 

Mathematical literacy empowers students to be flexible and apply what they know in unexpected, unanticipated ways.  The reason instilling mathematical literacy in students is worth the focus and effort is that students can go far beyond whatever it is we teach, or fail to, teach them.

In this episode we discuss both sides of mathematical literacy, why it is so powerful, how to help students develop literacy, and what common actions by math teachers hamper the development of mathematical literacy.
